Meeting of breeders
A meeting of the breeders of the Russian Meat Merino was held on January, 20. The breed was included in the state register of selection invention two months ago and was permitted for use.
The work on the breed began in 2004 with the delivery of three stud rams (Australian Meat Merino) from "Roseville Park" (Australia) to the stud farm "Manych". Three years later, forty-nine meat merinos were imported from “Roseville Park” and “Uardry” in Stavropol. The authors of the new selection achievement are 22 specialists of National Association of sheep breeders, scientists, managers and specialists of stud farms of Stavropol Krai: “Vtoraya Pyatiletka”, “Manych”, “Rodina”, “Russia”, “Lenin” of Arzgirsky district, “Put’ Lenina” of Apanasenkovsky district.
As Mikhail Egorov pointed out in his speech, the Russian Meat Merino is not just a new breed, but also a new perspective direction in the Russian sheep breeding which is wool and meat producing sheep. This path of development have been chosen long ago by farmers of South Africa, Argentina, Uruguay, Australia, etc.– the countries in which sheep breeding, despite the decline in the number of livestock, continues to be the promising and profitable industry.
Mr Egorov also noted that the process of the breed improvement would be continued. And according to the breed authors, there is a need in the exchange of breeding rams among farms-originators, as well as in the purchase of semen and embryos of Dohne from Australia for a customized mating. He also reported on the invitation of Chris Bowman to Russia, the former owner of “Uardry”, who confirmed his visit in April this year. Mr Bowman is a famous appraiser in Australia and New Zealand. It is planned that he will visit farms-originators of the Russian Meat Merino and will hold a master class for the bonitation of sheep.
Marina Selionova, Director of the All-Russian Research Institute of sheep and goat breeding, proposed a single plan of selection and breeding work for five years for all farms-originators. She also told the audience about the experience of breeding hornless sheep in Australia and shared her impressions about the forum of the World Federation of Merino Breeding in Australia.
The participants of the meeting visited a senior shepherd O. Yarin’s farm which contains 600 ewes and 200 hogget sheep of the Russian Meat Merino. On the farm of another shepherd A. Skyba, they saw rearing rams and breeding sheep, including those that participated in the Russian Agro-industrial exhibition "Golden autumn" in 2016.

In addition, the issues of livestock accounting and holding of the 19th Russian exhibition of breeding sheep were raised at the meeting.

A working meeting

On January, 16 the All-Russian Research Institute of sheep breeding and goat breeding held a working meeting of managers, scientists and specialists of the NASB and the Institute.

As noted by V. M. Egorov, Director General of the NASB, the interaction of the NASB and the Institute is close and productive. The most important result of 2016 was the development of a new sheep breed – the Russian Meat Merino. Further work in this direction is to improve livestock through the selective breeding of the flock.

At Egorov’s suggestion, it was decided to hold a meeting with the authors of the new breed, including experts of the NASB, scientists of the Institute, heads and specialists of six Stavropol breeding stud farms. The meeting is scheduled for January, 20.

Dr Marina Selionova, also the Director of the Institute, suggested considering and amending "Arrangements of valuation of stud fine-wool sheep breeds" in accordance with the requirements to the Russian Meat Merino.

Also there were discussed issues concerning the visit of one of the most authoritative Australian sheep breeders and holding the 19th Russian exhibition of stud sheep.
